More Facts About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

In 2003 the US Department of Labor reported 23 days as the average number of work days missed due to CTS Ė costing over $2 billion a year.

There is little medical evidence yet proving that carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by repetitive movements.

If youíre unable to tell the difference between hot and cold with your hand, you might be suffering from a severe case of CTS or some other injury (ie. an impingement or ganglion cyst).

Continually using your wrist while it is injured will lead to a more serious and/or chronic injury.

In chronic cases of carpal tunnel syndrome the muscles at the base of your thumb might atrophy (waste away).

Most doctors wonít suggest surgery unless conservative treatment is tried for 6 months.

Wrist arthritis or a wrist fracture can narrow the space in your wrist that might cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

Moving your hand or shaking your wrist can temporarily help to relieve the tingling sensation or swollen feeling.

Itís common in the early stages of CTS to feel pain and numbness at night while sleeping.

Not all wrist and finger pain or finger numbness and tingling is carpal tunnel syndrome.

Only 40% of people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome will continue to feel full pain relief 1 year after a cortisone injection.

Doctors wonít normally give someone more than 2 or 3 cortisone injections to reduce pain from CTS.

There is no clinical proof that use of computers, cell phones, PDAís, gaming systems, and other handheld devices will cause CTS.

Dear MendMeShop,

Over the past eight months I have been suffering from shoulder and arm pain. I just kept thinking that the pain would go away on its own. When I reached the point where I was unable to raise my arm over my head without assistance and forget about putting my arm behind my back. I decided that a trip to the doctor was due. She ruled out that I had an injury to the Rotator Cuff itself and determined that I had a soft tissue injury. Due to repetitive movement and heavy lifting. She suggested that I try physical therapy. With my work schedule and family obligations I knew that was going to be very difficult and I wanted something that I could fit into my schedule. So I began doing research on the internet for alternative treatments and exercises. That's when I found your product on the internet. I was somewhat skeptical as to rather it would perform as stated, but decided to give it a try. It was stated that it could take up to three weeks to feel results. BUT I am here to say that for myself it has done better. I have been using the Freezie Wrap for a week and have already felt some improvement. I can now raise my arm to just about shoulder height unassisted, and can now almost get my finger tips back behind my back. I make a point of using Freeze Wrap as soon as I get home from work to relieve the stress to my muscles from work and to keep the inflammation down. Now that I have gotten some of the inflammation gone I intend to incorporate the Inferno Wrap treatment to my regiment to just before going bed to aid the healing process and aid in a better night's sleep.

What is Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)?

Golfer's elbow is a form of tendinosis (chronic degeneration of the tendon). It is an overuse injury that causes pain and tenderness on and around the tendons that attach to the medial epicondyle (small bony part on the inside of your elbow).

Medial Epicondylitis or Golfer's Elbow causes pain in the hand flexors.

These muscles and tendons (brachialis, brachioradialis, pronator teres and flexor carpi radialis) are located in your forearm and help to flex and pronate your wrist and fingers.

Medial epicondylitis is often misdiagnosed as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) simply because the Lateral condition is much more frequent.

Medial epicondylitis is most common in the 20-49 age group, but the condition is certainly not limited to this group. Moreover, anyone who is prone to repetitive stress injuries is at risk.

Cumulative stress, as with the majority of tendon issues, results in debilitating damage to the tendon and in Medial Epicondyle cases continual stress on the wrist extensors will prove detrimental to the healing of this area.

Alternate names and/or Related Conditions:

  • Medial epicondylitis
  • Forehand elbow
  • Pitcher's elbow
  • Bowler's elbow

What are the Causes of Golfer's Elbow?

Golfer's elbow can affect anyone who uses their hands, wrists and fingers to wrap around instruments, type on keyboards, or grip objects (golfers, pitchers, racquet players, small parts manufacturers, office workers, lab technicians, hygienists, carpenters, wood choppers). It is most often a result of forceful contractions and overuse.

Medial Epicondylitis or Golfer's Elbow causes pain in the hand flexors.

Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow are a result of vigorous use and movements or overstraining of the forearm muscles that move your fingers, hand, wrist and forearm. Overuse of your muscles really depends on how long you do something and how much effort you exert doing it. The constant tugging at the point of attachment on the outside of your elbow (lateral epicondyle) or the inside of your elbow (medial epicondyle) can cause these tendons to become inflamed and strained. Your muscles and tendons can then become irritated which can result in weaker tendons, tiny tendon tears and development of scar tissue and/or calcium deposits.

If goflers elbow pain is due to a deterioration of the tendon (tendinopathy), it can take from two to six months to fully recover. Many cases of medial epicondylitis become chronic problems (just like lateral epicondylitis) that progressively get worse if sufferer continues performing the causal activity that started the condition in the first place. When you do this, your body definitely indicates there is a problem as the area will continue to generate a lot of pain.

What are the Symptoms of Golfer's Elbow?

If you have golfer's elbow, you will feel discomfort and pain when performing repetitive movements such as holding, squeezing, twisting with your hands or wrists, or curving your fingers as they hit a computer or piano. Pain can also be experienced when you try to pick something up with your palm down, when you flex your wrist and fingers forwards while extending your arm, or when you rest your forearms on a surface (while typing or grasping for something).

golfers elbow typical pain map

Pain will start on and around the bump on the inside of your elbow (medial epicondyle), and will eventually radiate from the inside of your elbow down to your forearm and wrists.

In the beginning, this pain will often go away within 24 hours after an activity. However if not dealt with immediately, your pain and stiffness will get worse over weeks or months, to the point where you may feel soreness even when your arm is still. You can also experience a severe burning pain and atrophied forearm muscles (loss of muscle mass), which results in a weakened grip. If left untreated, you may experience extreme loss of motion and function of your elbow and forearm.

Pain will start on and around the bump on the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). As time goes on this pain will start to radiate from the inside of your elbow down to your forearm and wrists.

Treating Golfer's Elbow - What You Can Do!

The good news is that most cases of golfer's elbow will heal with simple home conservative treatments and surgery is often not needed!

Step 1 - Reduce Regular Activities & Rest Your Elbow
Our Freezie Wraps provide consistent cold compression ideal for acute tendonitis injuries.

Allowing your elbow to rest is always recommended following injury. Avoid all activities that may have caused the injury or irritation and begin cold compression treatments as soon as possible. Immediate and continuous treatment with cold compression will quickly reduce your swelling / inflammation induced pain.

When you have your pain, swelling and inflammation under control you can actually start to apply treatments with tools that will encourage healing in your elbow. Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy will treat scar tissue and promote blood flow to heal your damaged soft tissue faster and more completely than other methods available. Using these conservative treatment tools can get you back to a life without pain and eliminate any further risk of re-injury.

Step 2 - Reduce Pain & Swelling with Cold Compression
When should you use hot or cold for injuries?

The 2nd step for conservative treatment of your elbow injury is to reduce the swelling to "open up" the area for more blood flow. Anyone in the health-care business knows that your blood supplies the oxygen and much needed nutrients required to heal wrist injuries. This is why for years, doctors, trainers, and other medical professionals have recommended RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) to treat the pain and swelling, chronic pain from injury and after any re-injury.

Although RICE can help to treat these symptoms, ice and freezer gel packs reach temperatures so low they can cause cryoburn, an ice burn on your skin. The problem is, up until now there hasn't been any other option to treat painful conditions and injuries, so ice and blue gel packs (full of anti-freeze and chemicals) have been the only choice available.

Fortunately you no longer have to settle for these ice cold methods that are uncomfortably cold against your skin, provide short term relief, cause ice burns, numb your skin and underlying tissue beyond feeling so you don't even notice the ice burn until it's too late and pool around your injury putting the cold everywhere except for where you need it most.

Use a Wrist Freezie Wrap for consistent cold compression to soothe your pain, swelling and inflammation.

An Elbow Freezie Wrap® allows you to treat your elbow in an effective and convenient way. Our Freezie Wraps® will wrap around your elbow keeping the cold right over your elbow injury for the entire length of your treatment. Our food-grade, non-toxic gel packs can be chilled in the fridge or freezer to tailor the amount of cold that you need for your injury. It doesn't matter how you cool it down, because our gel packs are chock full of gel that's designed to cool down into millions of tiny snowflakes. This method of cooling means our gel packs stay icy-cold for your entire treatment! The cushioned gel will wrap around your elbow and it won't budge for the entire treatment period. You'll no longer have to deal with annoying pooling around your elbow or have to hold a hard block of ice on your injury!

Cold Compression Therapy slows nerve and cell function - reducing the swelling that blocks blood vessels from doing their job.

When should you use hot or cold for injuries?

This is important because once blood vessels are blocked or damaged, they can no longer carry oxygenated blood through the tissue and tissue cells begin to break-down. Without cold compression therapy cellular break-down and tissue damage continues as the cells don't get the oxygen they need to survive. By limiting the amount of damage done to the soft tissue in your elbow, you also limit the amount of healing that needs to occur. This is a very important step to heal elbow injuries faster and with less pain! This is why you need to treat your elbow injury right when you notice pain / swelling / inflammation, or directly after a re-injury. Applying an Elbow Freezie Wrap® right away will stop the damage immediately and unblock your blood vessels to let your body's natural blood flow in to start healing the tissue.

Cold Compression Therapy = the Freezie Wrap®

It'll seem weird for you to read this, but there are a LOT of people out there that don't understand how fast cold compression with a Freezie Wrap® can get the swelling / inflammation in your elbow under control! After you get rid of the swelling for good you can start dealing with your elbow injury and pain head on.

Use a Cold Compression Elbow Freezie Wrap®:

  • 24 to 72 hours after your initial injury or when you first notice pain and swelling to stop cellular damage, relieve pain, and decrease swelling.
  • After exercise, workouts or activity of any kind to prevent re-injury.
  • Before and after surgery during rehabilitation to control pre and post-surgery pain and swelling.
  • Anytime you feel your elbow starting to get tender, painful or swollen again.
  • Anytime you have swelling, sharp throbbing pain or inflammation.
  • Any other situation where you need to draw the pain and inflammation out of your elbow.

Step 3 - Improve Circulation, Soften Scar Tissue & Prevent Re-Injury with Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy

After the inflammation in your elbow has been reduced, providing extra blood flow and strengthening the tissue in your elbow is recommended.

healing your elbow injury

Promoting blood flow to your elbow to help your body heal itself is a concept that has been utilized for centuries. Oxygen and nutrients, carried within the blood, are critical for the body to heal itself. Without proper blood flow, your recovery from any soft tissue injury will be delayed... sometimes for a very long period of time.

Even though the concept is simple, improving blood flow to your elbow while it's injured can be difficult. Traditional methods require you to move in order to promote blood flow - but that same motion that promotes blood flow can also make your pain and injury much worse. Relying on movement alone to increase blood flow puts you in danger of re-injuring your elbow.

So what do you do when you need to increase blood flow, but you can't move without re-injuring your elbow

This is where Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy (BFST®) comes in! Using BFST® will help with your recovery and heal your elbow more completely. BFST® increases the amount of blood that flows naturally to your soft tissue to nourish your soft tissue, improve elasticity and speed up the healing process. This increased Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy to your injured elbow is greatly needed.

Use a Wrist Inferno Wrap to increase blood flow and stimulate tissue growth.

The only way to get BFST® is through use of an Elbow Inferno Wrap®. The Elbow Inferno Wrap® is the only treatment method that improves blood flow and circulation on a deep tissue level. Other methods of warming up tissue (hot water bottles, hot baths, etc) will only ever increase blood flow on a surface / skin level. These methods need a LOT of time to even reach the tissue in your elbow on a deep tissue level. And even if you were to use them this long your skin would heat up to an uncomfortable level and you might even get burned!

The best source of heat treatment is from a product where you don't even feel that much heat. When you don't feel the heat, it means the therapy is working in your deep soft tissue which is really where you need it. It's kind of like how your heart works in your body. You can't "feel" your heart pumping blood all around your body to your arms and legs. You can't even hear your own heartbeat without listening very closely. This is exactly how deep tissue BFST® works too! You're not supposed to "feel" a lot of heat because the heat isn't treating your skin, it's treating the damaged tissue in your elbow by increasing the blood flow right in your soft tissue.

When should you use hot or cold for injuries?
  • When treating any soft tissue injury, an effective therapy will increase blood flow to the injury while the joint is immobile.
  • This increase in blood flow will accelerate the body's own ability to heal itself.
  • The Inferno Wrap® is the most highly effective blood flow stimulation device that you will find on the market that is approved by the FDA for use in the home or hospital.

Our Elbow Inferno Wrap® is made from medical-grade material - this should be as important to you as it's to us! Other products that are sold in stores are considered "consumer goods" meaning the material only needs to be as good as a sweater that you wear. Clothing articles like this don't need to meet high standards of production or materials and may include materials that irritate your skin.

Since our wraps are medical-grade products registered with the FDA, they are of a higher quality and need to meet way more standards for manufacturing (ISO 10993 - biocompatibility testing). This makes our wraps the safest product for heating treatment. Our manufacturer has spent years perfecting the wrap design to make sure you get the treatment you deserve!

Use the BFST® Elbow Inferno Wrap®:

  • After swelling and inflammation have been reduced with cold compression.
  • Before exercise, workouts or any repetitive tasks to warm up the soft tissue in your elbow to prevent re-injury.
  • Before and after surgery during rehabilitation to warm up your tissues before physical therapy exercising or stretching.
  • Anytime you feel your elbow has stiffened up, is tight and your mobility is reduced causing you more pain.
  • Anytime you have sore or aching tissue.
  • Any other situation where you need to increase blood flow to your elbow to relax your soft tissue, relieve pain, prevent re-injury and enhance flexibility.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Facts

CTS is the result of nerves in your wrist getting squeezed by thickened/injured tendons in your wrist or hand.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, carpal tunnel syndrome affects 4 to 10 million Americans.

Women are 3 times more likely than men to develop CTS.

People are generally at a higher risk of developing CTS between the ages of 45 and 54.

The carpal tunnel space in the wrist is smaller in women than men.

Those with diabetes or other metabolic disorders that directly affect their nervous system may be at a higher risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is probably the most common nerve disorder experienced today.

Approximately 3.7% of individuals in the US suffer from CTS.

Usually carpal tunnel syndrome will only affect one hand, but it can affect both hands at the same time.

Children usually donít suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Medications mask the pain but do very little in the healing of CTS.

Dear MendMeShop,

I just wanted to let you know that your products worked very well for my elbow problem. It did take more time than the initial warranty so I appreciate your company extending this time period. Your communication via email and telephone, explaining the correct procedure for the use of your products, were key. This allowed me to see that I was not using them exactly as I should and it made a big difference. I used them to the letter and today my elbow pain is gone - completely. I was ready to go to a surgeon so this was a much better alternative. Thank-you.
